KHIT 79, Pipe Inspection Certification Program

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) currently requires post installation inspection of culvert and storm sewer pipes installed on KYTC projects. Video inspection is required for all pipe material types and deflection inspection is required for flexible pipes. The purpose of the inspection is to look for poor installation practices and/or material defects that can be detrimental to the performance of the storm drain, which are cheaper to remedy during construction rather after the roadway has been completed and in service. Knowing what to look for during the inspection process and understanding how to use the testing equipment is vital to providing a thorough inspection. KYTC has asked the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to develop an inspection operator certification program to ensure an accurate and reliable pipe assessment is provided to KYTC.
