Description
Biological engineering sciences now add great value to a wide range of products and manufacturing processes for food, energy, chemicals, clean water, and advanced materials, and form the foundation of an emerging "bioeconomy" - one in which biological products and processes make major socio-economic contributions. The Commonwealth recognizes that the scientific and technological knowledge attained from research at the intersections of the pysical and life sciences will form the foundation for the growth of a new and sustainable bioeconomy. The overarching goal of our science program is to discover and develop engineered biosystems for energy, enviornmental and industry applications in an inclusive, statewide program that encourages interdisciplinary problem solving across the biological, chemical and engineering sciences and in research areas that will increase the competitiveness of our scientific research community across sectors.
