KY EPSCoR: URE Scope: Robotic Mapping of Magnetic Fields in a Magnetically Shielded Environment

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

This project is for the support of two undergraduate researchers, Faith Makumbi (University of Kentucky) and Gabija Ziemyte (University of Kentucky) to contribute to development of the spin transport subsystem of an apparatus to measure the Electric Dipole Moment of the neutron (nEDM) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This project involves both the fabrication of specialty precision electromagnetic coils leveraging techniques developed in a previous URE project, and the development of a nonmagnetic robotic manipulator to measure the magnetic fields produced by these coils in a low magnetic field environment. Both the magnets and the robot will be fabricated using additive manufacturing processes.
