Description
The first commercial winery in the United States was founded by Jacques Dufour, winemaker to Marquis de Lafayette, in 1799 on the banks of the Kentucky River (visitlex.com). Before prohibition, Kentucky was the 3rd largest grape and wine producing state in the country. In recent years, the industry has rebounded dramatically with over 70 licensed wineries and nearly 150 grape producers (visitlex.com). According to wineamerica.org, in 2022 the total economic impact of wineries in Kentucky was approximately $1.63 billion.
