Longitudinal Assessment of Bowel Ultrasonographic Appearance with Advancement of Enteral Feeds in Extremely Premature Infants

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

This study will enroll 20 extremely premature infants, born before 28 weeks of gestation, to describe changes in their bowel characteristics as enteral feeding progresses using point-of-care ultrasound. The goal is to identify infants who are at risk for developing a serious bowel infection called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We hypothesize that our study''s findings will provide additional, dynamic clinical data that will help clinicians distinguish between true bowel pathology (such as NEC) and normal physiological changes in the premature gut at the bedside using a readily available tool like ultrasound. This capability will facilitate early identification and treatment of serious bowel infections like NEC, potentially reducing the associated mortality by at least 50-60% if identified early.
