Description
The Managing Poo project is a partnership among the Kentucky Division of Conservation,
Kentucky NRCS offices, local Conservation Districts, the University of Kentucky, Kentucky
Division of Water, Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, and the Kentucky Dairy Development
Council. The project was designed to assist livestock producers who are nearing regulatory
action develop and implement conservation plans, KY Ag Water Quality plans, and nutrient
management plans. Implementing the practices outlined in these plans will reduce nutrients and
sediment loads entering waterways from private lands in KY.
University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment personnel will provide
farmer-focused education and outreach, technical assistance, and project evaluation for this
project. Specific activities provided by UK are as follows:
1. Develop and distribute promotional materials.
2. Develop and disseminate technical articles to media outlets.
3. Develop and assemble training materials for producers not participating in cost-share
programs due to cultural or religious reasons.
4. Provide one small group training per project year for producers not participating in cost
share programs due to cultural or religious reasons.
5. Provide five educational presentations per year at local producer meetings.
6. Make one-on-one technical contacts with identified producers who are nearing regulatory
action.
7. Evaluate project accomplishments.
8. Assist in preparation of progress and final reports.
