Description
The work outlined in the proposed project is on]going research conducted in the Carbon Management
Research Group (CMRG). The CMRG is an industry]government]academic consortium dedicated to
minimizing current and emerging environmental problems attributed to combustion products from coalfired
electric power plants. The industrial members of the CMRG include American Electric Power (AEP),
Big Rivers Electric Corporation, Duke Energy, East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC), E]ON U.S.,
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute (ICCI). The Kentucky
Department for Energy Development and Independence (KY]DEDI) is a government partner which
provides a cost]share funding for the program. The purpose of this consortium is to maintain and
strengthen coal]fired power plantfs comparative advantage as a low]cost producer of electricity, while
simultaneously improving the quality of environment. The CMRG will initially focus on reducing such
emissions from Kentuckyfs existing and aging fleet of coal]fired electric power plants in order to extend
the useful lifetime of these plants. Over time, the CMRG will redirect its efforts toward mitigating
potential emissions from newer, advanced generation technologies such as chemical looping
combustion, supercritical pulverized coal combustion and integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC)
plants.
