Matching Grant: Coals as Sequestration Reservoirs (Kentucky part of SECARB, Phase 2)

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The Kentucky Geological Survey proposes to study the potential for sequestering carbon dioxide in unmineable coal beds in partnership with the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership. The Survey will work with researchers at Virginia Tech studying the potential for enhanced methane recovery through carbon sequestration in the Southwest Virignia Coal Field, which borders the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. There has been little testing of the methane potential in eastern Kentucky, and this project will allow research into that potential with the added benefit of assessing the potential for emissions reduction through enhanced gas recovery.
