Mentoring and Career Development Grant

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Abstract In this project, we will build on a mentor-mentee relationship to accomplish four goals: (1) Prepare the mentee for success in the graduate program and profession, (2) Improve the mentor’s mentoring skills with a focus on gaining a better understanding of issues junior scholars of color face in academia and beyond and how to confront them, (3) Strengthen and extend the mentoring relationship between the mentor and mentee, and (4) Collaboratively produce high-quality research through the program. We identify professional development, research, and mentorship activities to accomplish these goals. Example professional development activities include mapping out milestones and coursework, discussing the ins and outs of the publication process, exploring post-PhD activities, discussing faculty search processes, and networking through various conferences and special interest groups. The main research activity will be a review of empirical studies in the literature that apply Quantitative Critical Race Theory in education, with the goal of producing a journal-style article capturing a typology or categorization of applications of this nascent theory. Through biweekly meetings, open and honest discussions, and intentional re?ection on the experiences of scholars of color, we will further develop our mentor-mentee relationship.
