Randomized Trial of Cash Transfer with Los Angeles’ Homeless Persons: Qualitative
Findings: Abstract
In recent years, communities and programs have begun using direct cash transfers to provide
financial resources to people experiencing homelessness. Rather than in-kind benefits which can
only be used for a prespecified goods or services, direct cash transfers – also known as
unconditional cash transfers – provide cash payments to individuals, which can be used as the
recipient sees fit.
This study is a randomized control trial of a cash transfer program for people experiencing
homelessness. The proposed scope of work includes analyzing qualitative data and writing and
disseminating project findings related to participant experiences in the study, including their
perceptions of or outcomes related to receiving direct cash transfers. Specific activities include
reviewing transcripts, analyzing data, developing memos and case summaries, identifying
themes, and writing manuscripts for publication.
The major goals of the proposed work are to:
1. Describe experiences of participants enrolled in a cash transfer program
2. Identify unique experiences of participants using case study methods
