The Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters of China is a public institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education, and provides Chinese language and cultural teaching resources and services worldwide. The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute was established in 2010 as a center for Chinese language, culture, art, and business and a gateway to China for the University. The UK Confucius Institute has been recognized as Confucius Institute of the Year twice in 2012 and 2014, one of the 15 awards given annually from among more than 400 Confucius Institutes world wide in 115 countries. The University of Kentucky has committed the entire finished area of the ground floor of the Lucille Little Library as the dedicated site of a Model Confucius Institute for a period of not less than 25 years. The total area usable by the Confucius Institute will be in excess of 1000 square meters. The area to be renovated, within that total area, consists of 747 square meters, which includes corridors and exterior spaces dedicated to the Confucius Institute. The total cost of this renovation construction is $5,600,000. The University agrees to expend institutional resources, commit real estate, and/or direct other private gifts given to the University for the Institute in the amount of $3,900,000 for the purposes of the renovation of the Institute’s Dedicated Site. The Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters commits to invest the remaining $1,700,000 on or before December 31, 2015.
