Abstract
OHS, Improving Accessibility of AADT Data for Safety Analysis on Local
Roads
AADT is a critical input to safety performance analysis. However, due to limited traffic monitoring
resources, AADT estimates are mostly available on state-maintained roads. Data on local roads are
extremely sparse.
A prior study has developed an approach to estimation of AADT on all roads, including local roads,
in Kentucky. We propose to use the latest data from KYTC and third-party vendors to update the
AADT estimates.
We also propose integrating AADT with other highway attributes and crash records on local roads
where safety performance analysis was previously limited due to lack of data.
Goals and Objectives
To update AADT estimates with latest data.
To integrate AADT estimates with other highway attributes and crash records on local roads.
Strategies and Activities
The KTC team will first collect all pertinent datasets that are needed, such as updated HIS roadway
geometry, usage, and speed data.
The AADT estimates will be updated by re-training and re-validating of the model using the latest
data.
Link the updated AADT estimates for local roads with other highway attributes and crash records
and analyze the sensitivity of safety performance with respect to volume and other factors.
