OHS, Work Zone Speed Assessment

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Abstract OHS, Work Zone Speed Assessment Work zone safety continues to be a problem in Kentucky. In 2023 both the number of fatalities and number of collisions in work zones were higher than in recent years. Motor vehicle speed is believed to be a major contributing factor in these crashes. Additionally, usage of cell phones and other technologies are likely contributing factors, as inattention results in drivers missing changes in posted speed signage or other changes to the roadway environment. Section C: Goals and Objectives 1. To improve the accuracy and completeness of the roadway database by accessing and compiling speed data pertaining to work zones in Kentucky. 2. To analyze the data to determine average speed and rate of vehicles driving above the posted work zone speed limits. 3. To integrate the speed data with the crash database and citation database. 4. To investigate any potential correlations between motor vehicle speeds, issuance of citations, and work zone crashes. 5. To investigate relationships between speed and distraction due to cell phones in work zones by integrating citation and crash data.
