Okoli Scope - Tobacco and Smoke-free Environments C2311: FY21 Tobacco (MSA): Special Populations Project: Enhancing Tobacco Treatment in Community Mental Health Centers

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The purpose of the contract is to provide technical assistance and outreach to support advocates and other stakeholders as they lead local and state smoke- and tobacco-free campaigns. KCSP will train community members to collect air quality data, and support them as they disseminate the findings to advance policy change. KCSP will analyze the data, create community-specific reports, and post on our website. KCSP will analyze existing county level data and create user-friendly fact sheets to disseminate timely information and data to promote smoke- and tobacco-free policy, and continue to disseminate updates and scientific findings via social media and our regular e-partner newsletter. We will maintain our website, serving as a clearinghouse for up-to-date information on secondhand smoke and smoke- and tobacco-free policy, including updating our smoke-free ordinance data base. We will plan and implement a statewide smoke-free conference to facilitate the exchange of best practices among community advocates to promote smoke-and tobacco-free environments and public health. In addition, we have proposed two continuing projects focusing on special populations. First, Enhancing Tobacco Treatment in Community Mental Health Centers aims to 1) provide tobacco treatment specialist training for providers within the CMHCs; 2) assist the 14 CMHCs in KY to develop a tobacco control plan; and 3) develop web-based training materials for providers that simulate brief evidence-based tobacco treatment interactions with patients in the hospital and community settings. Second, the E-cigarette Youth Prevention, Education, and Empowerment Program will a) implement and evaluate an evidence-based youth e-cigarette peer-to-peer prevention, education, and empowerment program, b) build capacity for prevention and education among youth and young adults, teachers, administrators, and other health advocates via coordination of a youth and young adult advisory group and professional development training, and c) conduct surveillance of existing tobacco prevention, education, and empowerment programs in Kentucky schools.
