Description
This project is addressed at improving teachers' proficiency in physical science
content and pedagogy in all elementary schools in Fleming and Lewis counties.
However, products that are produced will be shared across the state to potentially
impact all students. Consequently, the majority of requested funds fall within these
categories: salaries/personnel, substitutes, stipends, instructional materials, office
supplies, equipment, visiting speakers, and indirect costs, There is cost sharing in this
project and it is outlined in the budget summary.
This project will impact a total of 40 teachers from all the elementary schools in
two high need school districts. Approximately 1251 students in Lewis will be impacted:
Garrison 417; Laurel 99; Lewis Central Elem. 465; and, Tollesboro 270. Approximately
1327 students in Fleming County will be impacted: E.P. Ward 210; Ewing 247;
Flemingsburg 690; and, Hillsboro 180.
Participating in the project as both learners and participants are two professors
from two higher education institutions: 1 scientists and I science educator. Other
personnel essential to this project are: the Project Director and two Regional Teacher
Partners who all posses expensive training in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and
assessment.
All elementary principals and two district level administrators will be involved from
the start of the project and will be integral to the project. They will be examining
mechanisms to provide teachers with common planning time and other time to work as
a professional learning community after the project ends. Additionally, the Regional
Teacher Partners and Project Director will be available to work with the schools after
conclusion of the project.
