Grants and Contracts Details

Description

This proposal has been prepared in response to a request by Mr. Jeffery Sole of The Nature Conservancy for a proposal and cost estimate for conducting a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed 11-acre wetland within the Big Rivers Wildlife Management Area in Union County, Kentucky. The land is owned by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and that agency has contracted with The Nature Conservancy to construct the wetland. Consequently, an archaeological survey is necessary to evaluate the impact (if any) that the project will have on archaeological resources in the project area. This investigation is intended to provide specific information concerning presence of historic or prehistoric archaeological resources within the proposed project area and to evaluate any archaeological sites for their potential eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The work that is proposed will include a review of the existing archaeological sites and an evaluation of the extant documentary and cartographic sources relevant to the project area. This information will serve as the basis for the design and completion of a Phase I archaeological survey, using a combination of surface and subsurface investigative techniques. This survey work and associated analysis and report preparation will take place prior to initiation of actual construction efforts.
