Phosphorus runoff potential in major row crop soils of Kentucky

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

f.) Project background: In 2013 a new P-index was implemented in Kentucky. This P-index was developed with the latest information available and utilized data collected from various sites outside of Kentucky for validation because, like many states, Kentucky does not have P-runoff soil data specific to the soil regions of Kentucky. The new KY P-index does not include practices that have been approved in other states and built into state P-indexes and 590 Codes (i.e. alum treatment of poultry litter and gypsum amended soil, OH Code 590). These practices could be beneficial to Kentucky to reduce soluble P-loss from agricultural fields. We propose to demonstrate the applicability of the new Kentucky P-index on major agricultural Kentucky soils in high poultry production areas of the Commonwealth and demonstrate the potential of gypsum soil amendments and alum treatment of poultry litter to reduce P-loss in Kentucky soils. g.) Project objectives: o To demonstrate the applicability of the current P-index to Kentucky soils o To demonstrate soil additive (gypsum) and poultry litter additive (alum) to poultry manure applications to reduce the amount of water soluble phosphorus runoff
