Grants and Contracts Details
Description
ABSTRACT
The Bourbon County Health Department was awarded a grant to conduct an environmental
scan with youth to capture retailers’ tobacco marketing and displays. Part of the grant
requires the health department to conduct follow-up activities such as Photovoice to help
tell the story of Bourbon County youth’s experience with tobacco products and marketing
practices. The PI was invited by the health department to prepare and deliver a two-part
training, with the ?rst session involving an orientation to Photovoice and the goal of the
project (learning about youth experiences with tobacco products and marketing practices
to inform an environmental scan) and a topic generation exercise. Between sessions, youth
would send the PI’s students photos and initial captions. Then, at the ?nal session, youth
would “show and tell” their photos and ?nalize their captions based on group discussion of
the photos. After going through an initial facilitated experience, the youth team would
repeat photo-taking and discussion to collect more data as needed.
