Description

The University of Kentucky (UK) has a deep and on-going commitment to its foreign language and area studies programs, which are housed in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MCLLC). The Arabic and Islamic Studies (AIS) Program and the Chinese Studies Program (CSP) are majors at UK, offering four years of language instruction and numerous courses on culture, history and literature. UK also has an extremely strong ROTC program, which includes Army and Air Force units. UK’s growing ROTC is the largest program in Kentucky and one of the largest in the region with almost 300 cadets. UK has embraced the necessity of global awareness and the need for study abroad. UK has a strong Education Abroad and Exchanges Office with 11 employees. Both AIS and CSP have their own immersion summer study abroad programs: one in Jordan and one in Shanghai. Our Project GO proposal offers ROTC cadets an enhanced first year language program at UK, and then an immersion summer program in either Shanghai China or Amman Jordan. To prepare the students for the intensive summer study and to guarantee they reach the required proficiency level by the end of the program, the students will have individual customized tutoring by trained language partners, and they will be encouraged to participate in various immersive activities during the school year, especially designed to fit their busy schedules. In the immersion summer programs, students will have a complete immersion classroom experience, with the addition of individual conversation partners and structured experiences to further their language skills.
