RCPP 1277- Overgrazing and Soil Degradation on Horse Farms

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

This 4 year project will work with horse farms from across Kentucky to improve pasture management and soil health. We will work with NRCS and local Cooperative Extension Agents to get 25 horse farms signed up with the NRCS EQIP program that provides funding to improve management on the farm. We will collect data on soil and pasture health to make recommendations for improvements and to quantify the effects of improved management over the years. We plan to establish 3 of these farms as demonstration farms that will host educational field days to demonstrate improved management techniques to others. Finally, we will use what is learned from this project to produce a series of extension publications, YouTube videos and other educational tools to share further. To date, this project has received industry support of $10,000 with another $10,000 expected soon.
