Description
Adult PKU Clinic
Background:
PKU (phenylketonuria) is a hidden hereditary metabolic disorder, present at birth that may lead to
severe mental retardation, seizures, and other chronic disabilities. Treatment, beginning at birth
and continued for life, allows an affected individual to live a normal life and make contributions to
society.
Purpose:
To fund the Adult PKU program to find those individuals who have been lost to follow-up and are
off-diet and inform them of research findings that some recovery of lost skills is possible when
formerly untreated or non-compliant individuals with PKU are started on or returned to the lowphenylaline
diet and assist the individual to return to and maintain compliance with diet if they
wish to do so.
