PROJECT SUMMARY Instructions: The summary is limited to 250 words. The names and affiliated organizations of all Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PD/PI) should be listed in addition to the title of the project. The summary should be a self-contained, specific description of the activity to be undertaken and should focus on: overall project goal(s) and supporting objectives; plans to accomplish project goal(s); and relevance of the project to the goals of the program. The importance of a concise, informative Project Summary cannot be overemphasized. The current facilities and ventilation system (fans, controllers, etc.) is 22 years old with varying degrees of nonfunctionality. The original construction installed non-agricultural ventilation components and those components are largely unavailable or, if available, extremely expensive. The leading US swine equipment manufacturer was engaged to discuss ventilation issues and equipment needs. This project will replace and redesign the airflow in 12 of a total of 16 animal rooms. The current fans that exhaust air out the roof will be replaced with end-wall fans with industry-standard controllers in the central hallway for each building. The project will restore ventilation capacity and enable the continuance of facilities that utilize a unique swine herd, free of diseases that occur in all other academic research herds, that has been used to train over 25 MS and 20 PhD students and 7 visiting scholars from the US and 10 foreign countries. The swine research group at UK is one of the leading groups in the country and the research results produced have resulted in more than 200 presentations in 35 countries in the last 30 years with two of the faculty members serving as chair of the prestigious National Animal Nutrition Program (https://animalnutrition.org/). The maintenance of the swine research program at UK represents an important and critical need for the long-term impact of food and agricultural research related to a leading animal protein source for the world population.
