Description
This proposed RIA research will focus on the development of students’ scientific and mathematical content knowledge from pre to post project implementation of a NASA-based curriculum called Realistic Explorations in Astronomical Learning (REAL). We will examine how well the REAL curriculum creates equitable opportunities for all students (e.g. males, females, high/low SES) to learn space-related science and mathematics content. Few studies have examined equitable learning in the area of Aerospace Science. The REAL curriculum was developed by PIs, Jennifer Wilhelm (Physics/Math Education) and Ron Wilhelm (Physics and Astronomy). Christa Jackson (Equity Specialist) joins our RIA project as an Early Career Faculty member who is now focusing on gender issues in NASA-based STEM areas. In addition, NASA Collaborator, Jennifer Heldmann, will provide expertise in the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD), especially in the areas of Moon and Mars explorations, and in the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) in the area of Planetary Science.
