Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Kentucky has designed and constructed several “Innovative Intersections” on the state’s roadway system. To date, not much is known programmatically about these intersections’ operational and safety performance. An assessment of Kentucky’s Innovative Intersections is needed to provide feedback to the Transportation Cabinet for the planning, design, construction and operation of Innovative Intersections. The objectives of this research are 1) to evaluate the operational and safety effectiveness of roundabouts in Kentucky and 2) identify innovative intersection designs that have the potential to improve the operational and safety performance of Kentucky’s high crash intersection types. The resulting documentation will provide “Innovative Intersections Best Practices” for KYTC’s Project Development and Project Delivery that describe planning and design and operational consideration for new intersection types. This project will be completed in 2 phases. The first phase will evaluate roundabouts currently under construction or operating in Kentucky and the second phase will identify potential for other innovative intersection design.
