Description

Abstract RSF 93 HSIP, Evaluation of Durable Pavement Striping 01/01/2020 – 06/30/2023 The objective of this research project is to identify durable pavement marking materials that exceed Kentucky’s current specifications and test their performance on Kentucky’s roadways. The main deliverable from this research will be a report detailing the performance, in terms of retroreflectivity and durability, of various pavement marking materials as well as recommendations for improvements to Kentucky’s durable pavement marking specifications. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is interested in reviewing their current practices regarding durable pavement markings to identify potential improvements in Kentucky’s pavement marking specifications. Engineers at KYTC have noted the use of durable striping materials in other states that exceed Kentucky’s current standards including wider stripes, newer striping materials, and contemporary bead packages for increased marking retroreflectivity. In the interest of aligning Kentucky’s specifications with the state-of-the-art durable pavement marking practices of other states, KYTC has approached KTC to fund a research study aimed at improving Kentucky’s pavement marking specifications. Literature review of striping materials, practices, and standards. This will include a review of states that have adopted alternative pavement marking practices that exceed Kentucky’s current specification. Identify state of the art test methods to evaluate the retroreflectivity and durability of the selected pavement markings (listed in following sections of the work plan). Obtain all training necessary to perform these tests. Collect material samples of each pavement marking. Work with Central Seal to prepare a test bed for all material combinations to be assessed in the field. Evaluate the retroreflectivity and durability of the chosen materials on the test bed over a several year time period. Evaluate other installations of new pavement markings outside the test bed. These will include spray thermos, extruded thermos, tapes, and striping on sinusoidal rumbles at a minimum Document the performance of the test materials in report format, including recommendations for changes to Kentucky’s current durable pavement marking practices. Provide annual reports of research progress.
