1 PROPOSAL SUMMARY (ABSTRACT)
The NASA Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Rapid Response
Research (R3) program, in collaboration with the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and
Commercial Partnerships Office, seeks proposals that will address research issues important to
NASA with a goal of researchers working for one year to solve defined NASA technical problems.
This proposal addresses problems listed in the solicitation under Appendix A, SMD Task A, High-
Temperature Subsytems and Components for Long-Duration (months) Surface Operations.
The proposed work will build on preivious work, and shift focus on the development of reliable
gas-surface interaction models Venus atmospheric entry. The model development will be
specifically designed for Thermal Protection System made of woven carbon preform. The effect
of the TPS structure with the high-pressure high-temperature effects of the atmosphere will
studied, including the effects of radiation penetration, due to the expected presence of CN gas in
the post-shock region.
