Description
Research indicates an array of myths and misnomers about self-neglect, which may impact one’s ability to recognize signs of self-neglect, or their willingness to make a referral when they do. Even when referrals are made, Adult Protective Services (APS) cannot force individuals to accept services. These factors make improving the outcomes for adults experiencing self-neglect a challenging, yet crucial goal. There is increasing recognition for the need to respond to self-neglect referrals more creatively. Specifically, research suggests the need for holistic, adaptive responses that meet targeted needs. Therefore, the Adult Protective Services Self-Neglect Adaptive Response Initiative is designed to adroitly respond to self-neglect referrals. Adult Protective Services, in collaboration with the University of Kentucky College of Social Work (CoSW), will deploy the Adaptive Response Initiative utilizing an integrated team approach comprised of a Self-Neglect Assessor, ARI Interdisciplinary Team, and ARI Steering Committee. The overarching purpose of ARI is to improve the overall well-being for those referred for possible self-neglect.
