Description

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kentucky continues to maintain more than 1,000 unduplicated members per calendar year. Because fall registration is not yet complete, exact numbers are not yet available. We have already exceeded 1,000 members in calendar 2010 before registration in Lexington is complete and before it has begun in Somerset and Morehead. We project conservatively a total somewhere between 2009 membership of 1,304 and 2008 membership of 1,154. We have not offered fee adjustments of any sort to reach this total. In fact, earned revenue and membership have both increased each year even while we implemented planned fee increases. We offer voluntary instructors who meet other conditions for membership in-kind membership for the semester in which they teach, but these are typically no more than ten per semester. The OLLI will engage in its first annual fund raising campaign during the 2010-2011 academic year. (The plan is included with this submission.) This campaign is the result of at least three years of cultivation which required broad re-education of members and leaders, who had not been previously solicited and who had little knowledge and mistaken assumptions of OlLi finances. Notably, we have received five unsolicited gifts in the current year from members. We take this as a sign of readiness. We have constituted a member committee specifically to finalize and implement the plan.
