SPR 12-462 Concrete Pavement Repair manual

The objectives for this project are as follows: 1) Review available state of the practice procedures and recommended procedures for repair and maintenance of PCC pavements. 2) Identify specific techniques which have been used in Kentucky, both succusfully and unsuccessfully. 3) Review evaluation techniques necessary select the best rehabilitation/repair alternative based on the existing pavement conditions. 4) Develop a detailed evaluation and repair manual for utilization by design, construction and maintenance staff throughout Kentucky. Concrete pavements have been utilized on interstates, parkways, and secondary routes in Kentucky since the 1960’s. As with all pavements, fatigue is an ongoing issue. An inspector’s evaluation of a given failure is subjective and based upon their experience with concrete pavements. This project will develop a concrete repair manual to assist in the identification of all concrete distresses and the necessary remedial repairs needed. The manual will use photographs and detailed descriptions of all possible distresses common to Kentucky’s concrete pavements. The intent of this concrete repair manual is to build on recent manuals produced by the Strategic Highway Research Program, the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers, American Concrete Institute along with other state highway agencies. In addition, techniques which have been utilized within Kentucky in recent years will be reviewed. All of the aforementioned entities have developed manuals to identify concrete distress, and the appropriate repairs needed. This manual will assist, and train field personnel in the proper methods to use when repairing all types of concrete distress.
