SPR 14-468: Cost Benefits SMA Surface

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Kentucky has utilized Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) on a variety of project across the state for specialty applications. Many states have reported superior performance of these types of mixtures, with increased life expectancy of several years. However, historically these types of mixtures have been more expensive to produce. The purpose of this study is to develop SMA usage guidelines for Kentucky. This study would evaluate the potential benefits of using SMA mixtures on more roadways and the potential costs associated with its use. Information will be gained from other states to evaluate the potential cost/benefit effect for the material. The potential cost and performance differences between conventional HMA and SMA mixtures will be evaluated. Additionally, existing SMA mixtures in Kentucky will be identified for inclusion in Long-Term Monitoring.
