SPR 14-479: Roadway Geometric Design Training II - UTC match

A two-day workshop dealing with basic geometric design was developed in 2011 and delivered in 2012 to KYTC. The workshop covered the basic horizontal and vertical alignment issues and provided attendees with an understanding of the relationships among various geometric elements. The primary effort in this activity is to expand the previous training developed for KYTC on geometric design for roadways and develop a component dealing with intersection design. The objective is to develop a one-day course on intersection design where the basic concepts will be identified, the effects and calculations of intersection sight distance will be presented, possible control treatments at intersections will be identified, cross-sectional and pavement design issues will be discussed and the various design element values (i.e., lane width, corner radii, corner treatments, etc.) will be presented. The workshop will have hands on exercises where the concepts presented will be applied and provide for an experiential education. This workshop will build upon the success of the two-day workshop developed for KYTC that dealt with basic roadway geometric design. The new workshop will provide a basic understanding of the parameters involved in intersection design and provide participants with an understanding of the tradeoffs required during intersection design. Moreover, a recently completed study developed a tool for evaluating intersection design alternatives providing designers the ability to screen possible options and identify candidate designs that could address the goals of the design. The anticipated benefits of the training are expected to provide KYTC personnel with a better understanding of the issues relative to intersection design and allow for a more systematic selection of appropriate intersection designs.
