Description

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to: 1) review the current KYTC bridge inventory and assess bridge conditions and maintenance needs,2) based upon that analysis, identify a set of effective actions (either by state forces or by contract) and strategies for their implementation in a long-term preventive maintenance program, 3) assist KYTC officials in establishing a pilot preventive maintenance program in several (2-4) districts including identifying 20-40 candidate bridges per district and establishing the program budget requirements, 4) assist KYTC officials in developing cost-effective strategies for program, 5) develop specification for materials, special notes for contractors and job standards for in-house maintenance crews, 6) monitor initial work to determine suitability of work documentation and oversight, and 7) monitor bridge conditions and preventive maintenance costs to determine effectiveness of the pilot program (performance measures and benefits/costs. The anticipated outcome of the pilot program would be its expansion to all KYTC districts and its perpetual application in the foreseeable future.
