The objectives of this project are as follows: 1) Review available historical skid data and material properties available for asphalt surfaces using native Kentucky aggregates. 2) Compare available crash data for roadways utilizing native Kentucky aggregates. 3) Compare the performance of Kentucky’s traditional polish resistant aggregates surfaces with those which may be constructed with native aggregates. 4) Develop modified aggregate specifications as necessary. Currently Kentucky has three designations for surfaces mixtures relating to the polish resistant requirements of the aggregates within the mixture. These surface mixtures are selected based on warrants relating to the AADTT and percentage of trucks along a particular route. The aggregates used in these mixtures fall in to three categories, “A” aggregates, which are aggregates which have exhibited acceptable performance, “B” aggregates are aggregates which are being testing for inclusion in the “A” list, and “D” aggregates which are the remainder of the aggregates which meet all other Kentucky specifications. Currently the majority of the aggregates designated as either “A” or “B” must be imported from surrounding states which has the potential to increase the overall cost of surface mixtures. This study will determine feasibility of utilizing more native Kentucky aggregates as polish resistant aggregates.
