SPR 2013 Prime KTC: Rapid Retrofit/Strengthening of Bridge Components

The objectives of this research project are: 1) Deployment on four bridges of CatStrong Carbon fiber reinforced polymer Rod Panels (CRP) for rapid retrofit and/or strengthening; and 2) Produce a guide/specifications for the design and deployment of CatStrong. The repair cost of deteriorated bridge components is approximately $800 per worker per day. This is in addition to the cost of the repair material. The cost is based on the contracts awarded over the past five years for the repair of a number of bridges in Kentucky using high performance materials (e.g., carbon fiber sheets and laminates). Consequently, the reduction of work days will reduce repair costs and extend the utility of limited funds available for repair. Spliced carbon fiber reinforced polymer rod panels (CatStrong), recently developed at the University of Kentucky, have the advantage of the ease of application by a single worker without the need of heavy construction equipment or tools. Consequently, application of the panels reduces construction costs when compared with other retrofit measures. The product has already been successfully used for the repair of an impacted RC bridge girder over the Blue Grass Parkway.
