SPR 21-601: Combined Behavioral/Engineering Approach to Preventing Highway Fatalities

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The goal of Kentucky’s new Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is to prevent over 200 highway fatalities per year by 2024. Applying traditional, single-discipline approaches is not likely to produce this reduction. This project will investigate the potential of enhancing and/or combining engineering solutions with behavioral strategies (education/enforcement). The project’s first year will work toward development of a methodology. The second phase will pilot and test the methodology for Kentucky highway locations. Consideration will be given to specific geographic, temporal, and/or functional areas of the Kentucky highway system. OBJECTIVES • Develop a holistic approach to improving highway safety that integrates the 4 E’s – Education, EMS, Enforcement, and Engineering. • Deliver a tool for optimizing safety improvements on highway corridors. • Identify combinations of approaches that may significantly improve safety.
