Strengthening of the Louisa-Fort Gay Bridge with Carbon Strips--Federal Aid Research Task No. 118

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

II. Problem Statement Flexural cracks on the Louisa-Fort Gay bridge in Lawrence County have widened since they were first identified. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plates/strips will be used to strengthen/repair flexural cracks in the cast in-place concrete beams. Application of the CFRP plates/strips will provide additional load carrying capacity that is evidently needed in view of the continued growth of the cracks. This bridge is at a major intersection, and replacement is not an option. Consequently, repair and strengthening is the only option at this time. III. Objectives The objectives of this research are: (1) Strengthen the cast-in-place concrete girders of the Louisa-Fort Gay bridge with carbon strips. (2) Monitor and evaluate the performance of the retrofit for three years.
