In 2020, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services established the Kentucky Eating Disorder Council (KEDC) to raise awareness and develop resources to address eating disorders. Kentuckians experience high rate of social determinants of health (SDOH) that negatively affect physical and mental health. There is increased awareness of the intersectionality of SDOH and eating disorders. Studies have found associations between SDOH commonly experienced in Eastern Kentucky such as adverse childhood experiences and food insecurity with the development of eating disorders. Central Appalachia is one of the most impoverished and geographically isolated areas in the country. The one-time supplemental award to increase training around Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for eating disorders will allow the University of Kentucky’s Department of Physician Assistant Studies (UK PAS) to enhance the curricula on this important health topic. By integrating this training into the PCTE-PARB program, UK PAS will increase the number of PAs specifically trained to identify and address disordered eating in rural areas. This goal will be achieved by the following objectives: 1) Enhancing training on eating disorders in the UK PAS curriculum. 2) Integrating SBIRT for eating disorders into the PCTE-PARB program. 3) Providing experiential training to UK PAS students in using the SBIRT tool for eating disorders.
