Short Description:
There is a continued need for increased awareness around eating disorders in Kentucky.
Kentuckians experience high rates of social determinants of health (SDOH) that negatively
affect physical and mental health including access to healthy foods, access to appropriate
exercise facilities (sidewalks, biking trails, playgrounds, etc.), access to health care, adverse
childhood experiences, poverty and geographic isolation. These SDOHs are particularly high
across the Appalachian region. The complex nature of eating disorder diagnoses compounded by
the lack of screening and availability of specialized treatment provide increased opportunities for
affected individuals to develop severe complications requiring emergency treatment.
The one-time supplemental award in budget year 2024 to increase training around Screening,
Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for eating disorders (ED) allowed the
University of Kentucky’s Department of Physician Assistant Studies (UK PAS) to integrate
training on the SBIRT-ED tool into the curriculum. The one-time supplemental award in budget
year 2025 to increase training around SBIRT-ED will allow UK PAS to build upon this work
through professional development activities to support active learning for attainment of learning
objectives for eating disorders.
The active learning components to be continued, enhanced, or developed during budget year
2025 include an interprofessional high-acuity simulation experience focused on the prevention
and management of the complications of eating disorders and standardized patient encounters.
Professional development opportunities include faculty certification as healthcare simulation
educators through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, training by content experts,
development of training materials, and additional pertinent learning opportunities (conference
attendance, workshop participation, certifications, etc.). This supplemental award will help to
position UK PAS for sustainable integration of this important content into the didactic and
clinical curricula as we strive to meet the following goals
1) Enhancing training on eating disorders in the UK PAS curriculum.
2) Providing professional development to UK PAS Faculty for eating disorders and to enhance
experiential learning activities
3) Providing experiential learning activities to UK PAS Students on eating disorders
