Description

Evidence-Based Enhancement of the Markey CARES Tobacco Program PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The Markey Cancer Center is a dedicated matrix cancer center established as an integral part of the University of Kentucky and the UK HealthCare enterprise. As the only NCI-designated cancer center in Kentucky, Markey Cancer Center strives to produce a measurable reduction in cancer mortality in Kentucky, particularly the underserved central and eastern parts of the state (i.e., predominately the Appalachia region), through a comprehensive program of impactful research, community outreach, and patient care. Situated on a campus with six health profession colleges in close proximity to each other, Markey Cancer Center offers a history of rich transdisciplinary collaboration, an outstanding cancer prevention and control program that has produced seminal work in under-served and high-risk populations, nationally acclaimed basic research programs, and a translational therapeutics program. What this administrative supplement brings to Markey Cancer Center is enhancement of a population-based tobacco treatment program that is responsive to relevant clinical practice guidelines. The “Markey Cancer-specific Assessment, Referral, Engagement, and Support Tobacco Program,” or more simply, the “Markey CARES Tobacco Program” includes a provider education and patient care component. Specifically, provider education that is primarily in the form of an accredited online training program tailored to meet individual learner’s needs complements patient care that involves population- based assessment, proactive treatment, systematic follow-up, and integrated support. While evaluation of early implementation outcomes show promise for the Markey CARES Tobacco Program, there is yet much room for improvement as it pertains to reach and effectiveness. The imminent move to Epic as UK HealthCare enterprise’s electronic health record presents an excellent opportunity for enhancement of the Markey CARES Tobacco Program via adoption of several tools described in the C3I Epic Build Guide and establishment of a closed-loop, e-Referral system with the Kentucky Quitline. By streamlining connections between tobacco users and tobacco treatment specialists on- and off-site, the Markey CARES Tobacco Program will be poised to strengthen its commitment to reduce the burden of tobacco use in cancer patients. PROJECT NARRATIVE Located in the state with the highest all-site cancer incidence and mortality rates in the United States, the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center is dedicated to developing and disseminating evidence-based, high impact, and sustainable cancer prevention and control strategies. To provide the highest quality of cancer care, Markey now seeks to enhance its population-based tobacco treatment program via key partnerships with onsite partners and outside vendors.
