Technology Roadmap for Future Terrestrial & Extraterrestrial Mining Systems Phase I

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

There is a need to document an initial research strategy for developing the technology that will be required for autonomous mining systems that will have both terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications. From a terrestrial perspective, automated mining systems are needed to mine thin coal seams that cannot be mined using current technology. There is also a need for technologies that will protect miners in extreme environments, such as an oxygen-depleted environment related to an explosion or mine fire. From the extraterrestrial perspective, technologies are needed to extract resources from the moon and Mars that will be needed for energy, life support, and construction materials to support exploration activities.
