The Monument Workshop

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Grant Summary/Abstract: The Workshop requests $2 million dollars over three years from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop an interdisciplinary studio and legal clinic to answer these questions. Led by Melynda Price, Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan, and former Director of the Gaines Center for the Humanities and J. David Rosenberg Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky, and Zachary Bray, James and Mary Lassiter Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky, the Workshop will facilitate broader expressions of the powerful multiplicity and complexity of American stories. We will transform local, state, and national conversations about collective memory in America. And we will train the next generation of academics, activists, artists, and civil servants about American monuments, monument laws, and monument conflicts, ensuring that future commemorative work includes under-represented communities and previously neglected stories.
