TRB Transit IDEA: Medium-Term Ridership Forecasting
Transit ridership has not recovered to its pre-pandemic levels. Transit operators rely on ridership
forecasts so they can plan service and project revenue, but it is not clear that forecasting models based
on pre-COVID data still apply. This project will develop a medium-term (2-5 years) ridership forecasting
model to support transit agencies in their planning efforts. The model will operate at a stop-level for rail
systems and at a route-level for buses. It will be developed using a combination of data from MARTA in
Atlanta, and from other transit agencies.
It is expected to last 1 year, with a total budget of $100,000. UK’s share will be less than $10,000.
