UKRF-00022 - SCIP - GMD: A Pilot Evaluation of the CARE Team Suicide Prevention Program

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Project Title A Pilot Evaluation of the CARE Team Suicide Prevention Program Abstract All individuals ages 10 through 24 at risk of suicide must be identified and have their needs addressed. If UK Healthcare pediatric clinics screened all patients for suicide risk each year, it is estimated that 7,000 patients would need follow-up given the current patient population and rates of suicide risk identified at other children’s hospitals. To address this need, the division of pediatric psychology seeks to pilot a Crisis, Assessment, Resolution, and Engagement (CARE) team staffed with licensed mental health professionals and social work. The CARE team will pilot suicide assessment, the Stanley-Brown Safety Plan plus provision of gun locks and locking medication bags, resource navigation to address social determinants of health (SDOH) and mental health treatment needs, and Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) treatment. The CARE team will start by serving pediatric clinics that do not have integrated mental health services and where clinic leadership desires the team’s support. The CARE team will benefit pediatric patients and their families by enhancing patient safety and reducing patient distress. The CARE team will reduce suicide attempts at UK Healthcare in patients ages 10 through 24. In addition, patients at risk of suicide will engage in treatment and their endorsement of suicide risk will be reduced.
