Description

Food insecurity is a leading public health challenge in the United States affecting persons of all ages, including older Americans. Research shows that more than 15 million people aged 60 or older have issues with hunger, ranging from marginally to very low food secure. Many federal and non-profit sector programs have attempted to address the issue, from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program to Meals on Wheels and Feeding America. Research also demonstrates that food insecurity would be greater among seniors without SNAP. This project will organize an extensive research agenda through a competitive grants program to answer specific questions about the multi-faceted issue of senior hunger. The program will explore three broad categories of research, including descriptions of households with food insecure seniors, understanding senior participation in programs that address hunger, and evaluation of the impact of these programs.
