Description
Understanding Rye Disease Management 2023-2024
Chad Lee and Carl Bradley, University of Kentucky
Rye as a grain crop has a potential local market with distilleries. Farmers grew rye in Kentucky until about the 1920’s. Rye in Kentucky is highly susceptible to Fusarium head blight (FHB, or Head Scab). We propose to continue testing the effect of fungicide timings on various rye hybrids and populations on grain yield and grain quality.
1) RYE FUNGICIDE GENERAL PROTOCOL
A. Locations: 2: Princeton: Crider Silt Loam and Lexington: Bluegrass Maury Silt Loam
B. 6 Hybrids and Populations: Based on the 2022 and 2023 data, the hybrids and varieties will be changed for this coming growing season. Two of the varieties grew too tall and were prone to lodging. Those will be removed. Two of the varieties (or populations) we will test are ND-Dylan and AC-Hazlet, which have done well in UK trials with Drs. Phillips and Van Sanford.
C. 4 Fungicide Treatments (Miravis Ace) 1) Fungicide at flag leaf, 2) Fungicide at anthesis, 3) Fungicide at flag leaf and anthesis, and 4) No fungicide
D. Replications: 4
E. Crop Management: Planting Date: last week of September; Seeding Rate: 750K seeds/A; N rate: 75 lb N/A (applied in Feb and/or Mar)
F. Measurements: Head counts (after anthesis); Disease incidence and severity, Leaf diseases, if observed &Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) post anthesis; Leaf samples for Barley Yellow Dwarf (Diagnostic Lab for confirmation?); Grain yield, moisture test weight; and Grain distilling quality (all treatments and replications): Hartwick College testing lab
