Description
The University of Kentucky will offer the fourth residence-based, three-]week summer enrichment
academies in June 2017 for GEAR UP KY (GUK) students. In partnership with the Kentucky Council for
Postsecondary Education (CPE) and their GUK staff, the UK Division of Student and Academic Life (SAL)
works with many different colleges, academic support units and student services to provide a safe and
educational college/career readiness program for selected Kentucky high school students in the CPEfs
GUK schools. The academic and student life programming are directly linked to and should show
evidence of students' successful transition over the four years' time to the University's UK Core Program
student learning outcomes - this year focusing specifically on those for Intellectual Inquiry: Arts and
Creativity (http://www.uky.edu/ukcore/sites/www.uky.edu.ukcore/files/Creativity]arts_0.pdf). The
students will be enrolled in LA111 "Living on the Right Side of the Brain"h offered in Summer Term II by
the College of Agriculture, Food & Environment (CAFE). The students' performance in the course and
required co-curricular activities will be evaluated by the primary instructor, Dr. Ryan Hargove, and
findings will be presented in a reflective media production supported by CAFE and the Landscape
Architecture department.
These high schoolers are chosen by the CPE GUK staff and assigned to UK; and, they tend to be first
generation college-]going students who are capable of advanced work as evidenced by EPAS scores and
minimum GPA of 2.0 , have no major disciplinary issues, are eligible for free and reduced lunch, and can
show either by self-recommendation or by teacher/counselor recommendation to the GUK staff that the
student is sufficiently independent as a learner to engage in a summer enrichment, residency program.
The Summer Academy@UK 2017 is planned with the goal to prepare Kentuckians for success at the
University of Kentucky as first-year, first-time students in 2018. Graduate and undergraduate students
participate as instructional assistants, and will also serve as residence advisors. The UK Media Depot
supports the production of digital media as part of the students' projects. UK faculty and administrators
(including the President) contribute to the Final Showcase Dinner at the end to celebrate the GUK
Summer Academy@UK participants and their families. For more information, see
