Grants and Contracts Details
Description
The scientific text of the proposal should be attached to the preceding introductory pages. Please observe the following guidelines
in preparing the proposal.
1. The first section of The Proposed Research should be an ABSTRA CT of no more than 250 words. The abstract should
present the rationale of the research, its scientific objective, and an estimate of the significance to the field of research if the
objective is reached.
2. The body of the narrative should enlarge upon the salient points presented in the abstract. In addition, it should provide a
brief survey of pertinent literature (include titles of cited articles), a section on the plan of attack on the problem, and any
non-scientific matters which require explanation, for example, plans for access to specialized equipment, justification for
special budgetary requests, etc.
3. Proposals requesting continued support for a project carried out under an existing ACS PRF grant should contain a brief
Report on Progress. If appropriate, the Report may be the same as the most recent brief Annual Report on Progress
submitted to The Petroleum Research Fund.
4. The proposal should be as concise as is consistent with an adequate presentation and justification of the research idea. THE
PRF ADVISORY BOARD HAS SET AN UPPER LIMIT OF 4,000 WORDS, DOUBLE-SPACED, IN AT LEAST 10-
POINT TYPE, FOR THE SCIENTIFIC TEXT OF PROPOSALS FOR ACS PRF TYPE AC GRANTS, EXCLUDING
ABSTRACT, FIGURES, AND REFERENCES. PROPOSALS IN EXCESS OF THIS LENGTH MAYBE
RETURNED WITHOUT REVIEW.
5. Applicants are advised to refrain from attaching preprints or reprints of articles to proposals. It is best to convey information
from a paper that has not yet been published by including a short summary in the text of the proposal.
