Abstract

3-D sensing and recovery of weld pool surface take an important part in welding mechanism research and weld profile control. However, the interference of bright arc and the specular characteristics of the weld pool surface make the 3-D sensing of weld pool surface difficult. A low-power structured light stripe laser is used to project laser stripes on the gas tungsten arc(GTA) weld pool surface, then the reflected laser stripes from the specular weld pool surface are intercepted by an imaging panel. A charge-coupled device (CCD) camera is used to observe the changes of reflected laser stripes on the imaging panel with a band-pass filter which matches the laser in wavelength, then the 3-D information of weld pool surface, such as the height of weld pool surface, can be obtained. Seeking for the sensing regulation and the optimal combination of the sensing structure parameters, a sensing is designed. By using the sensing device, clear images of reflected laser stripes capable of reflecting the GTA weld pool surface are obtained in the presence of bright arc.
