title = "A microfabricated preconcentrating device for exhaled breath analysis",
abstract = "Breath analysis is a promising non-invasive method for health diagnosis. Several ketones and aldehydes in breath have been recognized as metabolic indicators of certain lung diseases. We report a fabricated microreactor with thousands of micropillars that have been engineered to selectively preconcentrate ultra-trace gaseous ketones and aldehydes of breath. The micropillar surfaces are functionalized with a quaternary ammonium aminooxy salt for capturing trace carbonyl VOCs by means of an oximation reaction. The reacted adducts are analyzed by Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). This method provides a quantitative analysis of ketones and aldehydes in breath.",
