A Model for Teaching Professionalism in CSD.

Abstract

Professionalism continues to be a hot, yet muddy topic among clinical educators and academic faculty in CSD programs because it influences workplace sustainability and establishes the therapeutic relationship. Professionalism is defined differently based on the setting and company. For CSD students, they may learn professionalism through coursework or practicum assignments. A consistent model of professionalism in CSD curriculum may facilitate attainment and application of professional skills. This scholarship of teaching and learning project investigated the impact of a medical model of professionalism (Stern, 2006) as well as an interactive video on students’ self-perceptions of professionalism using a pre-post survey. The principles of professionalism taught within the CSD Professional Issues course included excellence, communication, humanism, accountability, altruism, self-reflection, professionalism presence, and ethics. After attending this course, attendees will better understand the components of professionalism relevant to CSD and develop pedagogical techniques to increase students’ awareness of professional behaviors.
